Science High School programme

An intensive week in maths and science, and a research project every year.

Science High School programme — Pergel High School20 students / class
Fig. 1 Six hours of maths a week for four years, with physics, chemistry and biology in separate labs. From grade 10 every student runs a research project with a supervising teacher.

The Science High School programme was built for students who want to see mathematics and science as a way of thinking, not only as exam subjects. In the weekly timetable maths has six hours, physics and chemistry four each; lab lessons are taught to half classes by two teachers.

Every student keeps a lab notebook. Measurements are plotted by hand on graph paper; graphing software comes only after the student has learned to draw by hand. From grade 10 every student picks a small research question with a supervising teacher and works on it through the year. Some projects are submitted to the TÜBİTAK competition; the rest are shown at the school science fair.

The programme also prepares the ground for olympiad work without making it compulsory. Olympiad groups meet outside lesson hours with students who choose to join.
